President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) famously spoke these words to the American public during his 1933 presidential inauguration speech after defeating President Hoover in the 1932 election. FDR was attempting to comfort a nation that had been beaten down by the worst economic crisis in American history. His plan to offer each American a “New Deal” resulted in the creation of multiple programs and agencies designed to put people back to work, provide direct relief to those in need, and establish regulations for businesses and banks. While the jury may still be out in terms of labeling the New Deal (and 2nd New Deal) a success or not, one thing is certain, the resolve of the American spirit is second to none. As we attempt to navigate the uncertain times of 2020 our students are asked to reflect on the ideas and principles that helped the generations before us get through their tough times.
