Puritan Poetry and Music Today

Students in English 3 with Mrs. Gruntorad have been studying early American writers. Specifically, we have been reading texts by Puritan authors including Anne Bradstreet’s poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband.” This is a love poem that also illustrates the Puritans’ lifestyle and beliefs. Students were asked to analyze the poem and also find several poetic devices including anaphora, metaphor, assonance, alliteration, and hyperbole. The next day, students were treated to listening to a Backstreet Boys song and comparing it to the poem. Lastly, students had to find a song that they enjoy and compare the lyrics to Anne Bradstreet’s poem. This was a fun project!
