Students in Mrs. Gruntorad and Mrs. Benson’s English 2 classes have been studying the elements of fiction including plot, setting, characters, conflict, and theme. Students have completed numerous assignments including vocabulary squares, matching cards, Quizlet games, and online plot pyramids. These activities have helped build students’ academic vocabulary. Now students are working to apply their knowledge by identifying these elements in short reading passages. This week we will also start our “scary story” unit with Ray Bradbury’s “The Utterly Perfect Murder.” We also plan to read “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs. Students will eventually have the chance to write their own scary story using the elements of fiction.
