LHS and Nebraska VR
Seniors participating in Mrs. Archer’s Senior Transitions/Career Planning and Career Preparation courses have been busy working with NE VR Employment Specialist, Robin Hines, in order to facilitate a smooth transition from LHS to various post-school environments. This fall semester 2020, due to Covid-19 health/safety recommendations, Mrs. Hines has been collaborating with Mrs. Archer and her students via a virtual platform – Zoom. The basic role of Nebraska VR, a state-federal vocational rehabilitation program that operates in all 50 states, is primarily one of planning and assisting to identify appropriate post-school goals and needed supports to guide students to prepare for, find and/or maintain employment.
These seniors are busy finalizing their career and employment plans for after high school by setting post-school goals in the areas of education, employment, and independent living. In order to make better informed decisions, seniors have completed a variety of both formal and informal transition assessments, have completed the ACT college entrance exam, MAP assessments, and have made various virtual and in person college/university/job site visitations. In addition, students are in the process of completing college admission applications, FAFSA ID and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) applications, college specific financial aid and housing paperwork, and are beginning to complete various scholarship applications of their choice. They are in the process of completing work-related experiences and interviews in the career area(s) of their choice, and various other planning activities. Finally, these seniors are “putting the finishing touches” on an electronic career planning portfolio created on the www.careercruising.com website.
