Reading is an important part of our High School English curriculum. Without reading, there would be no writing and vice versa. Rebecca Joy Stanborough states in an article about the benefits of reading that reading does the following: strengthens the brain, reduces stress, and builds your vocabulary. Such skills are necessary for high school students, who are in an important developmental stage. For English 1 students, aside from reading our first class novel Of Mice and Men, students are also required to read independently a book of their choice. At the end of the semester, students will complete a book report to present to the class. One part of the reading process students enjoy is visiting the library, browsing the selections of books, and reading on the couches. Today, grab a book and indulge yourself with all the benefits reading provides.
