Over the last week in Western Civilization, we have been learning about the Renaissance in Italy and Northern Europe. The Renaissance was a time of revival for classical philosophy, literature, innovation, and art in Europe during the 14th-16th centuries. New architecture, art, and ideals dominated Europe at this time.

Last week, students were asked to name a modern day song, movie, and invention that would define our generation if we were in a Renaissance. The Mona Lisa, The David, Leonardo da Vinci, and many other impressive things came out of the Italian Renaissance. Some of the things from our modern day Renaissance included inventions such as the iPhone, social media, and cars.

On Monday, we addressed a popular Renaissance book called The Courtier, which taught people how to become a “Renaissance man” and behave. Characteristics of a Renaissance man included a soothing voice, the ability to make things look effortless, a warrior’s spirit, and an educated mind. Students were asked to name someone they feel epitomizes these ideals today. Some great responses were: Morgan Freeman, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Elon Musk.

For the remainder of the week, we will look at specific works of art, artists, and philosophers from the Renaissance era like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Martin Luther, and Desiderius Erasmus.
