Students in intermediate art 3 have been working on printmaking, exploring the techniques associated with linoleum cuts. To wrap up the unit, each student was challenged with designing an original holiday card, and mass printing them by hand.
The printing process entails using a brayer to roll out the ink. Once the brayer is loaded with ink it is then rolled onto the printing block, which is essentially a large stamp. The actual design is cut into the printing block by the students beforehand. Once ink has been rolled onto the block a piece of paper is carefully placed on the block and then burnished on the backside using a wooden spoon.
Each student was required to print a minimum of 30 cards. The high school Foundations of Leadership classes are then taking the cards to write messages to inmates at the Dawson County Jail.
