Economics/Financial Literacy
Mr. McPhillips
In Mr. McPhillips’ Economics classes, the students have been learning about Personal Finance from Dave Ramsey. This course revolves around making good financial decisions and staying out of debt.
Today, we started learning about taxes. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” While all of us can agree that paying taxes is not fun, the reality is that everyone will have to do it. The goal of this chapter is to educate the students on what to expect, what forms to fill out, and when they should file every year. Today, they learned where their tax dollars go by discussing the national debt as well as the government’s budget. We also briefly discussed W4 forms and what to consider when filling them out. This included a debate on whether or not getting a big refund during tax season is actually a good thing. Tax season for many of us tends to be a stressful time, but the goal is for the students to know what to expect. Hopefully, this chapter will give these students knowledge that will make tax season much less stressful when they have to begin filing on their own.
