QR Codes in the Classroom

Have you ever seen one of those funny little squares in your favorite magazines?  If you have, you have seen a QR code.  A QR code is a matrix barcode that is often found in magazines to advertise or provide more information about a certain product.  Using a simple app, QR codes can be scanned by smart phones, ipads, and ipods.  The codes are often linked to a specific website, video, or coupon for the product.  In addition, QR codes can also be used in the classroom.

Students in Mrs. Haines' math class used QR codes and ipads to check their work on a recent fractions activity.  Students solved a problem on a card and then used the Scan app on their ipads to check their answers.  After they became familiar with scanning the QR codes, they tried their hand at creating some of their own.  Students created math problems and a QR code to match.  Then they traded problems with other students in the class.  Students solved the problems created by their classmates and checked their work using the QR code attached to each problem.

Next time you are looking for an easy way to incorporate some technology into one of your lessons, try using some QR codes. The possibilities are endless.
