Holiday Break

Today is the start of a much anticipated holiday break. While you've been excited to get out of school for Christmas, I'm guessing that it won't be long before you're saying those two dreaded words..."I'm bored!"

You have two weeks to enjoy your family, friends, and if you've made the nice list, those new gifts! But let's face it, you know it's going to happen. You will whine to your parents or your family that you are bored because there is nothing to do. Let's take a few preventative steps to make sure you make the most of this vacation!

Check out new AR books from the library before you leave for break. Now is the time to check out that book you've heard everyone talking about. You can get started reading as soon as you get home from school. If it's a good one, you won't want to put it down. Wouldn't it be great to get a head start on next quarter's AR goal? Even better, wouldn't it be fabulous to see the look on your reading teacher's face when you come back from break and say you are ready to take an AR test? ShaZaaaM!

Hopefully you were one of the responsible students who took care of all of your assignments and school fines so you get to take your computer home. Check out a couple of these educational web sites. One of my favorites is http://www.wordlibs.com/. Create your own version of holiday songs, silly letters, or humorous stories by adding nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and sometimes conjunctions. With a click of the enter key, you have your very own piece of work that is sure to be entertaining.

Another fun website that I recommend is http://www.sldirectory.com/studf/cool.html. This is virtual middle school library that includes links to dozens of free games that have been parent approved. You will also find information on music, hobbies, pets, sports, and many more topics that interest middle schoolers. You are sure to find activities galore to keep you busy. Please remember to limit your time on the computer. Too much of anything can be a bad thing.

Enjoy being with the ones you love, take time to read a great book, and create a witty story that will make your friends laugh. Your vacation will be over before you know it. Make the most of it!
