MAP Growth Honor Roll and Spring 2018 Academic Pep Rally

The following are highlights from the May 2, 2018 LHS Academic Pep Rally concerning MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) score recognition. 

Students, you are not your NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) MAPscores or your ACTscore or any other assessment score.  YOU ARE NOT A TEST SCORE. Test scores are a tool; a tool to make us a better student, a better teacher, a better school.  Tests can tell us what we know and what we have yet to learn.  Tests are tools to keep our efforts, our coursework and our educational standards rigorous and meaningful. Tests are tools that keep your faculty and your school on track for preparing students academically for life after high school.   Use test scores as a tool to help you figure out what direction to head that best uses your gifts and talents.  AGAIN, you are not a test score.  Test scores are a tool!!

Empower yourself with knowledge on how to use this tool.  Freshmen and sophomores this year before you started the MAP test, we walked through a scholarship grid used by most institutions of higher learning that showed why academic GPA and ACT test scores matter.   This is information you need before your senior year of high school.  Because thousands of students in schools across this country are taking this same test, there is enough reliable MAP data to recommend high school coursework, predict a student’s probable scores on the ACT and  predict college/career readiness

We are empowered when we show up, give our best effort, and pay attention.

One of the ways your school gives you opportunities to empoweryourself is to set goals, make an academic action plan, do grade checks and have these conversations with your teachers . . . in homeroom and the classroom everyday  . . . .and we get to take tests – lots of them. Remember tests are tools . . .  tools that are necessary to see what students are ready to learn.  When we take the results of those tests, the results of our best effort, and make that information work for us, we are empowered.

Using our MAP testing – Measures of Academic Progress - at Lexington High School, we have set the bar high and established the Growth Honor Roll.  In the spring test season this school term all 9thand 10th grade students had the opportunity to use the MAP test as a tool to guide and empower their future.

The award for Growth Honor Roll recognizes students who met a growth or power goal based on a best ever RIT score plus the sum of the projected normed growth from fall to spring.  This normed growth can be anywhere from  +1 to +14 RIT depending on what the student’s best RIT score indicates he/she is ready to learn.  Making the Growth Honor Roll got even more challenging in the fall of 2015 when the NWEA adjusted the expected growth norms with 4 more years of test data gathered from schools across the country.  

Based on this empowering information, some students set and met a power goal beyond the projected growth RIT.

Today we congratulate:

144 students -- 71 freshmen and 73 sophomores met a growth or power goal in reading.

146 students – 73 freshmen and 73 sophomores met a growth or power goal in math.

49of these students (24 freshmen, 25 sophomores) met their growth or power goal in both math and reading

To put this in perspective, another 56 R + 88 M = 144 students missed receiving a Growth Honor Roll certificate by either tying their best score or missing their normed projected growth goal by the needed RIT normed growth units from fall to spring.

 

In school year 2016-17, LHS added a 90+ Clubaward to recognize students whose RIT scores placed them in the 90th– 99thpercentile.  It is very challenging for students with these high scores to increase a previously high RIT score.   The goal for these students will be to continue to increase their RIT scores and maintain their membership in the 90+ Club each test season.

To all those recognized for meeting your growth or power goal based on a best ever score and/or being a member of the 90+ Club, your self-discipline and drive to always do better makes us all better. We are grateful you continue to set the bar high for our school.
