Visualizing Stories
August 24, 2012
Our school district is taking a stronger focus on writing. This is a very important skill that translates to every area of a person's life. Part of our focus on writing has to do with visualizing what is being read in order to have a better understanding.
We started off with a fun task on the first day of school. These students were read a story and had to draw what had happened in the story when I paused. The more detail that was added in the picture, the more the student could remember about the story. Once we finished the story with the pictures, the students retold the story to a classmate using their pictures as a guide for the story.
This is a great way to show understanding when reading. We will continue to build on these skills this year and grow their writing.
