Short Stories from the Depression Era
October 3, 2012
Students in English 1 classes at the High School have been reading short stories set during the Depression era. "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier and "The Osage Orange Tree" by William Stafford are two short stories that students have read thus far. The main characters in these two stories are also undergoing a rite of passage, or in other words, the journey of growing up. Students have written structured paragraphs with quotations from the stories that explain what it would be like to grow up during this time period. This week students are also writing a poem that expresses some of their own memories of growing up.
