A recent study showed that 65 percent of Americans haven’t looked at their credit report in the past year, 34 percent have no liquid savings and 21 percent typically carry more than $1,000 in credit-card debt each month.  Students who enter college and the work world with the right financial skills will be able to avoid these problems that have so much impact on their lives.  This year in our Personal Finance class students have been learning about a variety of topics including creating a budget, how to properly use credit cards, and how to invest for their retirement.  In our current unit the students are learning about taxes, including how to file their own income tax return.  Many of our students do not file returns and are missing out on the tax refund that they deserve.  Learning the basics about money will give our students an advantage in life no matter what career they choose.
