Line Dancing with Mr. Bell

November 25, 2014

Last week, in Mr. Jilka’s Senior Passages class his students were beginning their look into fear and how people handle it.  To help students to be able to experience fear, but in a safe way, Mr. Jilka asked me to come in and teach his students how to dance a couple of line dances.  Obviously, learning to dance isn’t something that everyone looks forward to.  However, Mr. Jilka and I thought that it would be a great way for them to experience vulnerability and some healthy fear.  I taught them two different line dances.  The first was the toughest and it is called the Disco Samba.  After conquering that, we learned the Cowboy Charleston, which is a much simpler line dance.  The students handled both really well and they went from fear to a sense of joy (whether it was from enjoying the dancing or enjoying that the lessons were over!)
