Advanced Biology Lab

February 19, 2013

The Advanced Biology class just finished their unit on microbiology. Their lab exercise consisted of sampling and growing bacteria in a laboratory setting. Students learned how to prepare agar for growth, sterile techniques for sampling bacteria and techniques for growing bacteria in an incubator. After growing their bacteria, students began to identify their bacteria by learning the steps of the gram stain and then applying them to bacterial slides. The college students also learned how to count colonies of bacteria as well as how to maintain sterile techniques in a lab setting. It was amazing to see some of the growth that we were able to get from every day things such as seats, doorknobs, computer keyboards, and even coffee cups.
